Logic General manufactures replicated discs by imprinting directly into the plastic the pits and lands, or digital ones and zeros which are readable by the laser in a compact disc drive. Pits and lands are imprinted into the plastic using a stamper, which is created in a process called glass mastering. CD-ROMs created in this manufacturing process are the most durable, scratch and sun resistant, and are best for long-term use. Replication is most cost effective for quantities over 1,000.
Recordable CDs (CD-Rs) differ from replicated CDs in that their pits and lands are created by using a laser to burn tiny holes in the dye layer of the CD-R media. CD recorders produce CD-R one-offs (single copies of a CD disc image), which can then be read back in a standard CD-ROM drive. This process is very similar to what a user can do with a single CD-R drive in a home or business PC. These CD-Rs are also used as the source for the glass master, which is necessary in CD manufacturing. Duplication is most cost effective for quantities under 1,000.
